Thanks to the generosity and support of several organizations and a lot of individuals, the Mighty Wurlitzer will again roar in The Long Center for the Performing Arts on June 2. This event, a variety show featuring several talented area residents and headlined by the inimitable Ken Double, will signal the 30th anniversary of Ken’s association with theatre organ in Lafayette.
The organ, severely damaged in 2007 by a roof leak, was removed in fall 2011 by Carlton Smith, nationally known organ restorer. It is scheduled to be reinstalled in late March 2012. Funds to repair the organ included a lead gift of $13,000 from the Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette and $10,000 raised from a fundraiser hosted by Bob and Ellie Haan during a reception at their historic home. Additionally, support for the extensive repair work was provided by The Caterpillar Foundation, and Tipmont REMC.
This beautiful and unique musical instrument needs regular maintenance to keep it roaring and entertaining audiences, and you, too can be a part of the support by joining LCTOS and/or making a donation to the LCTOS maintenance and repair fund. Eventually, we hope to have an endowment established to guarantee funds are always available to keep the Mighty Wurlitzer in pristine condition.
